What are carrier oils and lotions, and why should I use them?
Essential oils are highly concentrated and must be diluted with a base, known as a carrier oil or lotion, before it is applied to your skin. Essential oils tend to be volatile, meaning they evaporate or vaporize when they come into contact with air. Unscented lotion, or a carrier oil, such as Jojoba Oil or Sweet Almond Oil, allows your body to properly absorb essential oils. This gives you full control of dilution before the essential oils are applied to your skin. Unscented bath salts can also be used as a carrier to dilute essential oils.
What is the dilution ratio for carrier oils and lotions?
The general rule is a 1-3% dilution rate, depending on the aroma of the carrier oil or lotion being used. For bath salts, we recommend 6 drops per ounce, or a 1% dilution rate. For lotion, we recommend 6 to 18 drops per ounce. For Jojoba Oil and Sweet Almond Oil, we recommend 12-20 drops per ounce, or a 2-3% dilution rate.
For the elderly, children, or those with sensitive skin, a 1% dilution rate is recommended for all carrier oils, lotions, and bath salts.
What is a diffuser and oil burner, and why should I use them?
With only a few drops of essential oils, a diffuser adds a powerful therapeutic aroma throughout your space. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for each diffuser's dilution rate.
Oil burners allow you to disseminate oils throughout your space simply by lighting a tea light.
Should I ingest essential oils?
As always, essential oils should never be ingested and are for external use ONLY. Call poison control immediately if ingested.
